The Glycemic Index in Sport

The glycemic index (GI) provides a way to rank carbohydrate-rich foods according to the blood glucose response following their intake. The GI is calculated by measuring the incremental area under the blood glucose curve following ingestion of a test food (glucose or white bread) providing 50 g of carbohydrate, compared with the area under the blood glucose curve following an equal carbohydrate intake from the reference food. All tests are conducted after an overnight fast (1).
The GI reflects the rate of digestion and absorption of a carbohydrate-rich food. Thus, the GI is influenced by: the food form (including particle size, presence of intact grains, texture, and viscosity); the degree of food processing and cooking; the presence of fructose or lactose (both have a low GI); the ratio of amylopectin and amylose in starch (amylose has a slower rate of digestion); starch-protein or starch-fat interactions; and the presence of antinutrients such as phytates and lectins (1).
Generally, foods are divided into those that have a high GI (glucose, bread, potatoes, breakfast cereal, sports drinks), a moderate GI (sucrose, soft drinks, oats, tropical fruits such as bananas and mangos), or a low GI (fructose, milk, yogurt, lentils, pasta, cold climate fruits such as apples and oranges). Tables of the GI of a large number of foods have been published internationally (2).
Some practitioners have recommended manipulating the GI of foods and meals to enhance carbohydrate availability and improve athletic performance. For example, low GI foods are often recommended before exercise to promote sustained carbohydrate availability. Moderate to high GI foods are recommended during exercise to promote carbohydrate oxidation and following exercise to promote glycogen repletion.
Thomas and colleagues initially raised interest in the use of GI in sport by manipulating the glycemic response to pre-exercise meals (3). They reported that the consumption of 1 g of carbohydrate/kg from a low GI food (lentils) one hour prior to cycling at 67% of VO2max increased endurance compared to an equal amount of carbohydrate from a high GI food (potatoes). The low GI lentils promoted lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin responses and more stable blood glucose levels during exercise compared with the high GI potatoes (3).
In a second study, Thomas and associates provided 1 g of carbohydrate/kg from two low GI meals and two high GI meals (powdered foods and breakfast cereals) one hour prior to cycling to exhaustion at 70% of VO2max (4). The low GI meals were associated with higher blood glucose levels after 90 minutes of exercise compared to the high GI meals and appeared to provide a sustained source of carbohydrate throughout exercise. However, there were no differences in time to exhaustion between the low GI meals and high GI meals and no correlation between exercise time and meal GI.
Sparks and colleagues provided 1 g of carbohydrate/kg from a low GI food (lentils) and a high GI food (potatoes) 45 minutes prior to exercise (5). The subjects cycled for 50 minutes at 67% of VO2max and then underwent a 15 minute performance trial. The high GI meal caused an increase in blood glucose before exercise and a decline in blood glucose at the onset of exercise compared to the low GI meal. Despite these alterations in exercise metabolism, there were no differences in work output during the performance trial.
DeMarco and associates provided 1.5 g of carbohydrate/kg from a low GI food and a high GI food 30 minutes prior to exercise (6). The subjects cycled for two hours at 70% of VO2max and then rode to exhaustion at 100% of VO2max. Plasma insulin levels were lower for the low GI meal through 20 minutes of cycling and the exercise time to exhaustion was longer for the low GI meal compared to the high GI meal. The low GI meal also maintained higher blood glucose levels at the end of two hours of exercise, which may have improved subsequent maximal effort.
Sherman et al (7) compared the ingestion of 1.1 g/kg and 2.2 g/kg of a high glycemic carbohydrate beverage 1 hour prior to exercise. The subjects cycled at 70% of VO2max for 90 minutes and then underwent a performance trial. Serum insulin was initially elevated at the start of and during exercise and blood glucose initially decreased. However, time-trial performance was significantly increased 12.5% by the carbohydrate feedings, presumably via increased carbohydrate oxidation.
There is insufficient evidence to support the recommendation that all athletes consume low GI index foods before exercise. The hypoglycemia and hyperinsulinemia following pre-exercise carbohydrate feedings are transient and will not harm performance unless the athlete reacts negatively to high glycemic foods. A low glycemic index pre-exercise meal may be beneficial for athletes when consuming carbohydrate during exercise is not practical or possible. Athletes should evaluate their responses to high-carbohydrate foods with both low and high glycemic indexes in training to find what works the best (1).
Athletes who react negatively to high glycemic foods can choose from several strategies: consume a low glycemic index carbohydrate before exercise; take in carbohydrate a few minutes before exercise; or wait until exercising to consume carbohydrate. The exercise-induced rise in the hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine, and growth hormone inhibit the release of insulin and thus counter insulin?s effect in lowering blood glucose.
Consuming carbohydrate during prolonged exercise enhances carbohydrate availability and improves performance. Although it makes sense that athletes should consume carbohydrate sources that are rapidly digested and absorbed to promote carbohydrate oxidation, the glycemic response to carbohydrate feedings during exercise has not been systematically studied. However, most athletes choose carbohydrate-rich foods (sports bars and gels) and fluids (sports drinks) that would be classified as having a moderate to high GI (1).
Consuming adequate carbohydrate following exercise helps to replenish glycogen stores between daily exercise sessions. Burke and associates investigated the effect of GI on muscle glycogen repletion following two hours of cycling at 75% of V02max (7). The subjects consumed 10 g of carbohydrate/kg/day from high GI or a low GI meals. The high GI diet promoted greater muscle glycogen storage (106 mmol/kg) than the low GI diet (71.5 mmol/kg) after 24 hours.
The most rapid increase in muscle glycogen during the first 24 hours of recovery may be achieved by consuming foods with a high GI. However, Burke and colleagues note that the total amount of carbohydrate consumed is the most important consideration for glycogen repletion. They recommend an intake of 7 to 10 g of carbohydrate per kg for maximum daily glycogen restoration (1).
The GI concept has limitations. The GI is based on equal grams of carbohydrate (50 g), not average serving sizes. The numbers that are available are also largely based on tests using single foods. The blood glucose response to high GI foods may be blunted when combined with low GI foods in the meal. However, the GI can be applied to mixed meals by taking a weighted mean of the GI of the carbohydrate-rich foods that make up the meal (1).
The GI may be useful in sport by helping to fine tune food choices. However, the GI should not be used exclusively to provide guidelines for carbohydrate and food intake before, during, and after exercise. There are other features of foods that are important to the athlete, such as the food?s nutritional content and the practical issues of palatability, portability, cost, gastric comfort, and ease of preparation. Since food choices are specific to the individual athlete and exercise situation, athletes should choose foods according to their nutritional goals (1).

Game fowl industry experts answer the million-dollar question: Is there a sure-fire way to breed a champion?
It is believed to be the world’s oldest spectator sport, dating back about 6000 years in Persia (now Iran). Great men in history have been known to participate in it. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson were all cockers. Alexander the Great staged cockfights on the night before a battle to impress courage and valor upon his soldiers.
Today, this sport has been outlawed in most European countries as well as the United States. But breeders of noble feathered gladiators of this sport cannot be dispirited. In fact, they come in droves, even to migrate, in a country that still holds this ancient sport in reverence as history itself- the Philippines.
Thus raising the Philippine Gamefowl Industry into its pedestal as a Php10 Billion industry, generating employment from the caretakers in breeder farms to handlers in derbies to inventors to office employees in multinational companies.
Currently there are two national associations of breeders, the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders (NFGB) and the United Gamefowl Breeders Association (UGBA). These national associations compose of regional associations all over the country.
Total breeders in the Philippines today is estimated at 6 million. It prods some people to say, the best place to launch any campaign is at the cockpit, where you can reach 6 million heads of families in one congregation.

Cannibalism: Prevention and Treatment
By Phillip J. Clauer, Poultry Extension Specialist Animal & Poultry Sciences Department - Cannibalism in fowl is a costly and vicious habit that poultry producers can not afford to ignore. It may occur at any age among all breeds, strains and sexes of fowl.


Cannibalism usually occurs when the birds are stressed by a poor management practice. Once becoming stressed, one bird begins picking the feathers, comb, toes or vent of another bird. Once an open wound or blood is visible on the bird, the vicious habit of cannibalism can spread rapidly through the entire flock. If you notice the problem soon after it begins, cannibalism can be held in check. However, if the problem is allowed to get out of hand it can be very costly. Cannibalism will lower the birds value due to torn and damaged flesh, poor feathering and can result in high death losses. Once this habit gets out of hand it is difficult to eliminate.

Since there are numerous reasons for outbreaks of cannibalism, it is important that cannibalism control be a part of your management program.

I. Cannibalism is usually caused by one or more of these conditions:
1. Overcrowding: chicks should be allowed:
1/4 sq. ft./bird for first 2 weeks
1/2 sq. ft./bird for 3-8 weeks
1 sq. ft./bird from 8 to 16 weeks of age
1.5 sq. ft./bird from 16 weeks on
With gamebirds, double the above recommendations. With pheasants, allow 25 to 30 sq.ft./bird after 12 weeks of age or use pick prevention devices.
2. Excessive heat: When the birds become uncomfortably hot they can become extremely cannibalistic. Be sure to adjust the brooding temperature as the young fowl get older. Brood young fowl at 95°F. for the first week and then decrease the temperature 5°F. per week, until you reach 70°F. or the outside temperature. The temperature should be measured at the height of the birds back directly under the heat source. Do not heat the entire brooding facility to the recommended temperature.
3. Excessive light: Extremely bright light or excessively long periods of light will cause birds to become hostile toward one another. Never use white light bulbs larger than 40 watts to brood fowl. If larger bulbs are required for heat, use red or infra-red bulbs. In birds 12 weeks of age or older, use 15 or 25 watt bulbs above feeding and watering areas. Don't light fowl more than 16 hours per day. Constant light can be stressful to the birds.
4. Absence of feed or water or a shortage of feeder and waterer space: If the birds have to fight for food and water, or if the birds are always hungry they will increase pecking. Be sure that birds have free access to water and feed at all times.
5. Unbalanced diets: Extremely high energy and low fiber diets cause the birds to be extra active and aggressive. Feed lacking protein and other nutrients, particularly Methionine, will also cause birds to pick feathers. Make sure you feed a diet balanced appropriately for the age and types of fowl you are raising.
6. Mixing of different types and colors of fowl: Mixing different ages of fowl or fowl with different traits promotes pecking by disrupting the flocks normal pecking order. Never brood different species of birds together. Don't brood feathered leg fowl, crested fowl or bearded fowl with fowl without these traits. Curiosity can also start pecking.
7. Abrupt changes in environment or management practices: If you plan to move young birds to a new location, it is best to move some of their feeders and waterers with them in order to help them adapt. When you change over to larger feeders and waterers it is helpful to leave the smaller equipment in the pen for a few days to help during the change.
8. Brightly lit nests or shortage of nesting boxes: Don't place bright lights near the nesting areas. Also, allow 1 nest for every 5 hens. Vent pecking by layers is also a common problem.
9. Allowing cripples, injured or dead birds to remain in a flock: Fowl will pick on cripples or dead birds in their pens because of the social order and curiosity. Once pecking starts it can quickly develop into a vicious habit.
10. Slow feathering birds are most prone to cannibalism: Take extra precautions with slow feathering birds. Most cannibalism occurs during father growth in young fowl. Birds with slow feathering have immature tender feathers exposed for longer periods of time leaving them open to damage from pecking. Don't raise slow feathering birds with other fowl.
II. Additional preventive measures include:
1. Allow the birds to use up their energy in an enclosed outside run. This will keep the birds busy and allow them to peck greens, ground and insects instead of other birds.
2. Give the birds a large handful of fresh greens like clover grass or weeds, each day. This increases the fiber in the birds diet. High fiber diets keep the birds crop full and makes the birds more content.
3. Use of mechanical devices in aggressive birds like gamebirds is advisable.
4. Finally, beak trimming is used in most commercial laying flocks. Trim the beak by remove _ of the tope beak and about 1/3 of the lower beak providing a square tip. This makes it difficult for the birds to harm each other. However, beak trimming should b done by someone experienced in proper trimming.
III. Treatment for a cannibalism outbreak:
1. Since cannibalism can be caused by several conditions, you may not be able to determine the exact cause of the problem. However, stress no matter how slight, is usually the main factor.
o Try to correct any practices which may have lead to cannibalism.
o Darkening the facilities by using red bulbs.
o Remove any badly injured birds.
o Applying an "anti-peck" ointment or pine tar on any damaged birds usually stops pecking.
o Lower the pen temperature a bit if possible.
o Don't take chances! Make the cannibalism control part of your management program and you will save a great deal of time and money.

Ang boy scout keep ay isang pamamaraan kung saan ang isang manok ay laging handa. Bagay ito sa atin na mga karaniwang sabungero. Mga sabungero na malimit sa hack fights lang lumalaban. Di sila pumupusta ng malaki. SA katunayan di nila alam kung kailan sila magkaroon ng pamusta at nang mailaban ang kanilang mga manok. Kaya kailangan talagang ang manok ay laging handa at puwedeng ilban ano mang oras na kakayanin na nang bulsa.

Ang mayayaman ay laging handa ang mga bulsa kaya wait na lang sila kung kailan handa ang manok. Tayo naman dapat laging handa ang manok at wait tayo kailan handa ang bulsa.

Una sa lahat, pagkatapos maglugon purgahin ang mga manok at paliguan ng anti-mite shampoo. At saka tingnan kung di ba sobrang bigat o payat ang mga manok. Kapag ayos lang, samakatuwid ay handa na sila isabak sa ating Boy Scout Keep.

Dahil common man's keep nga, ito ay matipid sa pera, sa panahon, at sa lugar. Kaya natin itong gawin kahit nag-iisa. Ang kakailanganin lang ay ang cord o talian na hindi aabot sa P20 ang halaga; 3x3 folding wire pen na mabibili sa halagang P200; kulungan na suguro'y gagasta ka ng P100 bawat isa; at maliit na sulok sa iyong bakuran na mai-ilawan kung saan pwede mong pakainin at bahagyang i-exercise ang manok kung gabi. Dahil hindi naman tayo mapera at walang sapat na lugar hindi na tayo gagasta pa para sa conditioning at running pens, flying pen, pointing pen, scratch box, training table at iba pa.

Ang pagkain naman natin ay karaniwang grain concentrate at pigen pellets lang o kaya’y yong GMP ng Sarimanok (Thunderbird). Siguruhin lang na ang pigeon pellets ay may mataas na crude protein contents o mataas ang porsyento ng protina.Kung ang isang kilo nito ay hahaluan natin ng isang kilo ring concentrate magkakaruon na tayo ng pagkain na may 15-16% protein, tulad ng mga pre-mix maintenance feeds na mabibili sa mga agrivet supplies.

Dahil walang siguradong schedule ang laban ng ating manok, dapat ay ito ay isang boy scout, laging handa. Mas mainam na sa kulungan lang ito patulugin sa gabi upang hindi mabasa kung umulan at mahirap pa nakawin. Ilabas ito kina-umagahan mga bandang alas singko ng umaga at ilagay sa talian.

Bandang alas-sais ikahig ito ng dalawa o tatlong minuto. Kung ikaw lang mag-isa at wala kang katulong sa pagkahig doon mo na lang ikahig sa isang manok na nakatali. Yung hindi pa ilalaban o isang reject o baldado na. Pagkatapos ay ilagay mo sa 3x3 na may lamang tuyong dahon ng saging. Bigyan ng iilang pirasong cracked corn at pabayaang mag scratch ng 10 o 15 minuto. Pagkatapos ay ibalik ito sa cord.

Pakainin alas-siyete at huwag kalimutang bigyan ng tubig. Pabayaan lang sa talian hanggang tanghali. Kung ikaw ay may pasok siguruhin na palaging may masisilungan ang manok sakaling uminit o umulan. At ihabilin sa iyong asawa o anak o sino man ang maiiwan sa bahay na tingnan at siguruhin na walang aksidenteng mangyayari sa manok.

Mas mainam kung ikaw ay makakauwi sa tanghali. Pag-uwi mo sa tanghali hilamusan agad ang manok at ilagay sa 3x3 na may tuyong dahon ng saging at bigyan ng kaunting tukain at hayaang kumahig habang ikaw ay nananghalian. Kung ako, doon ako kakain sa harapan mismo ng manok. Hindi lang na mas gaganahan akong kumain pag may manok na nakikita, mapagmamasdan ko pa ng husto ang kondisyon ni tinali. Pagkatapos ay ibalik sa cord at doon na sya buong maghapon.

Pagdating mo sa hapon pakainin agad ang manok. Kung ang uwi mo ay palaging maaga at may araw pa duon nalang pakainin sa cord. Pagkatapos hayaan mo sa talian. Pag itoy humapon na ibalik sa lupa at hayaang humapon uli. Ulit-ulitin ng apat o limang beses ang pagbaba sa gayon ay mapilitan itong lumipad at humapon uli pabalik at ma-ehersisyo ng husto. Pagkatapos hayaan mo nang humapon at magpahinga ng mga 30 minuto o isang oras bago ipasok sa kulungan.

Ganito lang ang gagawin mula Lunes hanggang Biyernes. Tuwing Sabado ipahinga mo na si manok matapos ang pananghalian. Ilagay mo na sa kulungan buong hapon at ilabas mo sandali sa oras ng kanyang pagkain sa hapon. Sa Linggo, ilabas mo ito at ilagay sa cord mga alas-sais ng umaga. Pakainin mo alas-siyete at paglipas ng 30 minuto ibalik sa kulungan. Handa na si manok kung sakaling ilalaban mo mo sa araw na ito. Kung hindi mo ilalaban dahil kulang ang pamusta mo o kaya natalo ka sa ibang manok, isampok o ispar mo itong bandang alas-tres o alas-kwatro ng hapon.

Tandaan lang maigi ang sumusunod:
1. Ang ating normal na pagkain ay parehas ang halo ng concentrate at pellets. Isang sukat bawat isa. Ngunit sa tatlong huling pagkatuka bago ang laban ay gawin mong 1 sukat ng concentrate, kalahating sukat ang pigeon pellets at lagyan mo nang kalahating sukat na cracked corn. Umpisa mo itong ibigay Sabado ng umaga. (Carboloading. May iba ring sistema na hindi na gumagamit ng ganitong pamamaraan sa carboloading. Tingnan sa Manwal)

2. Kung sa tantiya mo ilalaban mo si manok ma-aga-aga sa Linggo, kalahati o 1/3 nalang ng kanyang nakasanayan na dami ang ibigay mo sa Linggo ng umaga.

3. Huwag kalimutang paliguan ito kinabukasan kung ito ay inispar mo sa halip na ilaban.

4. Painumin ng tubig kahit sa araw ng laban. Sa derby may schedule na sinusunod at ang manok ay nasa kulungan lang namamahinga habang naghihintay sa oras ng laban. Dahil dito pwede mong kontrolin ang moisture nito para eksakto ang pointing. Pero sa hack fight hindi mo alam kung kailan mailaban ang iyong manok at maliban pa, kailangan niya ng moisture sa ulutan dahil malamang na mainit at lagi pa itong hinahawakan habang inuulot. May init ang kamay ng tao.

5. Bigyan ng mumurahing multi-vitamins ang manok mo isang tableta bawat Lunes, Miyerkules at Biyernes. At mumurahing B-12 tablet naman yung 100mcg lng , tuwing Martes, Huwebes, at Sabado. Ang mga tabletang ito ay hindi aabot ng piso ang halaga bawat isa.

6. Hilamusin ng kaunti ang mukha ng manok at basain bahagya ang sa puwetan, gilid at paa tuwing umaga, tanghali at sa gabi pagkakain.

7. Tandaan mabuti ang hipo ng manok saan pinakamagaling siyang lumaban pag-inispar. Ang manok na underweight, payat o kaya masyadong tuyo ang katawan karamihan ay mahinang pumalo, walang lakas at wala sa timing. Ang overweight, sobra sa tigas ng katawan o kaya sobra ang basa ng katawan naman ay mabagal kumilos at medyo short ang palo. Ngunit may mga manok na gusto ang medyo payat o medyo mataba kaya ang pinakamaigi pa rin ay sundin ang hustong timpla saan ang manok ay kikilos ng maigi overweight man siya o underweight ng bahagya.

Ang opisyal po na titulo nito ay “ MANA Seminar on Advance Selection, Conditioning and Pointing of the Gamefowl.” In short, MANA advance seminar nalang.
Buong araw tayo doon. Araw ng Sabado yan. Mag-start tayo 8am at 6pm tayo magtatapos. 7-8am ang registration doon nalang sa site at may lunch break 12-1 pm.
Susulitin natin ang panahon para mapagusapan natin ang lahat na kailangang pagusapan. Basahin nyong maige ang Manwal at pagaralan kung ano pa, para sa inyo ang dapat linawin. Ihanda nyo rin po ang inyong mga idea na sa palagay nyo ay makatulong sa ating mga kamana.
Huwag kayong mag atubiling ituwid kung may mga nilalaman ang Manwal na sa palagay nyo ay mali o kung may mas tama para sa inyo. Tatalakayin natin, pagaaralan at alalamin kung alin talaga ang tama at nang maipamahagi natin sa lahat.
Yan po ang pakay natin ang magtulungan upang mas gumaling ang ating pagmamanok.
Five hundred lang po ang bayad. Bring our own baon lang po tayo. May mga kainan din doon sa Circle. Ang kape at snacks natin sagot na daw ni kamanang Dan.
Wala tayong sponsor sa seminar na ito kaya tayong mga miembro mismo ang sponsor at solo pangalan ng MANA ang affair na ito. Ang 500 ay kuntribusyon nyo para sa gastusin. Ngunit kung marami ang dadalo ay baka bababa pa sa 500 dahil mas marami na tayong magambagambag.
Pwede pong bababa sa 500 pero hindi na lalampas. Kung kukulangin kami na lang mga prime movers ng Mana ang magdadagdag. Compute lang natin doon ang gastos at adjust natin ang kuntribusyon.
Mahirap kasi ang kumuha ng sponsor dahil sa Manwal ay may mga tinutukoy tayong mga produkto na ating ginagamit at, in effect, parang ini-indorso, kahit hindi natin sadya.
Walang kumpaniya na mag sponsor kung ang kanilang produkto ay hindi kabilang sa mga nabanggit natin. Maliban lang kung talagang napakabait nila at kusang loob na tutulong sa MANA.
At hindi naman maige kung ang mag sponsor ay yong kumpaniyang may mga produkto na nabanggit natin, dahil unfair po sa kanila. Unfair sa kanila kasi aakalain ng publiko na kaya natin isinulat ang kanilang mga produkto dahil sponsor natin., hindi dahil talagang nagustuhan natin ito.
Unfair din po sa atin bilang may akda ng Manwal at baka sabihin ninyo na ang mga produktong binanggit natin ay dahil mga produkto ng mga sponsors, kahit hindi totoo na nagustuhan natin.
Kung sabagay, ang mga iba’t-ibang brand names ay may generic names. Maari naman na nagkataon lang na isang brand lang ang nabanggit natin o nagamit natin, yon pala maari rin naman pala tayong gumamit ng ibang brand sa may parehong generic na produkto. Kaya kayong may Manwal kayo na ang magisip-isip.
Ang ating registration ay 7am-8am. Pagka 8 impunto ay umpisahan natin ang seminar. May mga manok tayo na aktwal na ipatuktok doon. Ito ang ating real-time activity na para tayong nasa sabungan sa araw ng laban.
Kung makarating kayo 7am makikita ninyo kung paano at ano ang ipakakain sa manok na ito. Sa umpisa ng seminar 8am, ipakikita natin ang pagligpit sa manok na ito sa loob ng kulungan at ang paglagay ng takip.
Pagkatapos ng real-time activity na ito, ay isa-isa nating paguusapan ang mga kabanata ng Manwal. Simulan natin sa mga prinsipyo, ang pagpili, nutrisyon, ehersisyo, at pagpatuktok.
Pagdating ng tanghali bago tayo mag- lunch break, isa na namang real-time activity, ipakita natin ang pagpalabas ng manok sa limber pen upang obserbahan ang lakad ng pagpatuktok at nang ito’y makaunat at mapakain base sa schedule ng laban.
Den balik na naman tayo sa hapon para sa demonstration sa pagtari, sampi, catch cock, at iba pang ehersisyo. Ang pagtimpla sa pakain at wastong pagbigay sa mga gamot.
Mga 4pm real-time activity na naman. Tapos pagusapan natin ang paghanda sa hack fight ang boy scout keep. Sa huli ay ang demonstration sa paglimber, ng manok bago tarian, pagpalakad at warm up sa loob ng gradas, at ang pagbitaw sa aktwal na laban.

Advanced seminar sa nilalaman ng Manwal

Ang Masang Nagmamanok (MANA) advanced seminar and workshop sa pagpili at pagkundisyon ay gaganapin sa Nov. 8, 2008, araw ng Sabado, sa Quezon Memorial Circle Seminar Hall sa Quezon City.

Ang seminar ay isang malaliman at kumprehensibong talakayan sa mga nilalaman ng Manwal ng MANA sa Makabagong Pamamaraan sa Pagpili at Pagkundisyon. Kaya ang nakabili lang sa Manwal ang maaring makadalo.

Buong araw ang talakayang ito. Mula 8am hanggang 6pm. Registration ay mula 7am hanggang 8am. P500 lang ang bayad pero bring your own pagkain o kaya'y doon na bumili sa Circle.

Ang 500 ay contribusyon nyo lang sa mga gastusin tulad ng bayad ng venue, sound system, table and chairs, at expenses ng mga resource persons at miembro ng working committee.

Radio program to boost fight for cockfighting in the Philippines

The Masang Nagmamanok (MANA), in its effort to boost the fight for the preservation of cockfighting in the Philippines, is eyeing a radio program promoting cockfighting that will reach the far-flung barangays in the country side of the Philippines.

Kamana Dan Baltazar, one of MANA's primemovers is now negotiating with a government-owned radio station for a program to be broadcast nationwide.

Ang Tumbok ngayon ay nag-concentrate na ng kanilang mga kopya sa Metro Manila at piling mga karatig na lugar.

Kaya marami sa ating mga kamana sa Iloilo, Cebu, Bicol, at sa iba pang rehiyon na dating naabot ng Tumbok ay nanghihinayang dahil hindi na nila matutunghayan ang mga balita tungkol sa Masang Nagmamanok (MANA).

Kaya sinisikap ngayon ng mga primemovers ng MANA na magkakaroon tayo ng programa sa radyo.

Sa kasalukuyan ay may negosasyong namamagitan sa MANA at Sports Radio. Inasasahan na di magtagal maririnig nyo na sa radyo ang LLamado Tayo. Hihingiin pa natin ang pahintulot ng Tumbok na magamit natin ang pangalang Llamado Tayo sa ating programa.

MANA, the nationwide organization of common cockfight aficionados in the Philippines will soon launch its own radio program in an effort to reach out to the millions of Filipino sabungeros in the countryside.This was announced recently by MANA's news and information bureau.

As of Oct, 2008, with the column Llamado tayo, published daily in tabloid Tumbok, as the lone medium of mass communication reaching out potential members, MANA already banked on almost ten thousand members.

Tumbok, a publication owned by the Philippine daily Inquirer has been concentrating its circulation in Metro Manila and selected key urban centers. With the radio program,reaching the countryside, it is expected that the membership will reach the targetted 100,000 kamanas in a few months' time.(Franz Ong, Oct 7, 2008)

Dec 20: Mana Day

If we got it right, the first issue of the column LLamado Tayo came out in Tumbok on Dec. 20, 2006.

After only two years, the column succeeded not only in winning thousands of readership but also in the organization of Masang Nagmamanok (MANA). A check with the records, showed that to date, MANA has a registered membership of 7862 from all over the country.

If the trend continues MANA will easily achieve the targetted 100,000 members by next year.

For this MANA should be thankful to both the author of the column and the paper.

I suggest that Dec. 20 be made the official MANA Day and also an occasion for expressing our gratitude to Tumbok.(Frank Ong,Oct. 5 2008)

Mana: Dami at Pagkakaisa

Walang duda napakalaki na ng pinagunlad ng sabong mula sa paging libangan tuwing araw ng Linggo, ito ngayon ay isa nang napakatanyag na isport, malaking industriya at kaakitakit na mapagkakitaan.

Napakarami nang nagpapalahi ng manok panabong. Nagsilabasan ang mga babasahin at programa sa telebisyon ukol sa sabong. Panay ang pa-derby at hakpayt sa buong kapuluan. Samantalang bumabaha sa merkado ang mga produktong pang manok. Sa likod ng lahat ng ito ay ang napakaraming masang sabungero na siyang tunay na gulugod o backbone ng industriya.

Sa bawat nagpapalahi, ilan ang tagapagalaga ng kanyang manok? Sa bawat may-ari ng sabungan, ilan ang naghahanapbuhay sa sabungan niya? Sa bawat kasali sa derby, ilan ang nagbabayad sa pinto upang manood? Sa bawat malaking sabungero, ilan ang mayroon lang iilang pirasong tinale sa kanilang bakuran? Dapat lang, at napapanahon na siguro, na ang masang sabungero ay mapagtuonan ng pansin, mabigyan ng kinatawan, at, marinig ang boses sa isport at industriya ng sabong.

Ito ang nais abutin ng MANA (Masang Nagmamanok), isang pambansang kilusan at samahan ng mga masang sabungero. Ang mga layunin ng MANA ay ang sumusunod:

1. Ang pangalagaan ang kapakanan ng mga maliit na sabungero, partikular na, ang mga naghahanapbuhay sa sabungan. Inaasam na sa darating na panahon, ang mga handlers, mananari, casador, kristos, sentensiyador, farm hands ay magkakaroon ng mga benepisyo tulad ng insurance, pension at iba pa.

2. Ang mapatingkad ang kaalaman ng ordinaryong sabungero sa pagmamanok. At, sila’y mabigyan ng pagkakataon na magkaroon ng angkop na materyales sa pagpapalahi at paglalaban.

3. Ang ipaglaban ang sabong sa gitna ng banta na itoy gawing labag sa batas tulad ng nangyari kamakailan lang sa Estados Unidos, at ipreserba ito bilang isport, hanapbuhay, industriya at bahagi ng ating kultura at tunay na mana.

4. Ang magtulungan at makipagtulungan sa iba pang haligi ng industriya sa ikabubuti ng sabong at ikauunlad ng lahat na mga sabungero.

Inaasahan na matupad ng MANA ang nasabing mga layunin pamamagitan ng pagpakita ng dami at pagkakaisa.

Ang pagkatatag ng MANA ay bunsod ng mungkahi ni kamanang Boying Santiago ng Camarines Sur na lumabas sa pitak na” Llamado Tayo,” na magtayo ng samahan ang mga masang sabungero. Ang pitak na ito, noon, ay arawaraw na lumalabas sa pahayagang Tumbok, na pagaari ng Philippine Daily Inquirer group of publications. (Ngayon mababasa ang Llamado Tayo sa dyaryong Larga Weekly.)

Ang Llamado Tayo ay tumatalakay sa ibatibang aspeto sa pagmamanok at binabasa ng napakarami arawaraw, kaya di nagtagal marami ang sumapi sa MANA.

Kasunod nito, ang MANA ay nakapagpaseminar sa ibatibang lugar at rehiyon ng Pilipinas, sa tulong ng mga kumpaniya tulad ng Excellence Poultry & Livestock Specialist, Bmeg-Derby Ace, Sagupaan, Secret Weapon, at Thunderbird.
