Johnny Jumper Kelso

Johnny Jumper, owner of Pee Jay Farm in Ripley Mississippi, is a Living Legend in the Sports of Cockfighting Hall of Fame.

Before he become known in the world of cockfighting, Johnny worked at a shoe factory. Johnny raised chickens and into cockfighting but not dominant to be known.

Johnny is very close friend of Cecil Davis. Cecil Davis had a lot of country walks for gamefowls. Cecil had 100 stag walks from Walter Kelso and 50 stag walks from Bill Japhet almost every year. Walter and Bill got their main breeds from John Madigin and Thomas Murphy when these two gentlemen decided to quit the sports. Both Walter and Thomas are known for breed named after them. Cecil also got all stocks of Walter and Bill and become known for Cecil Davis Kelso gamebreed. Johnny got some good Cecil Davis Kelso from Cecil particularly the Out & Out Kelso families.

Bill sent a stag to Cecil for country walk. Cecil then sent this same stag when he was a cock to Johnny for training. When the time come to fight him, Cecil told Johnny not to use him because they do not know where he come – the pedigree that is. But at a later time, they showed this cock twice. The first against Curtis Blackwell green legged Hatch in Alabama cockfight event. The second in Arkansas cockfight event where the owner and breed of the opponent was forgotten by years past. On both occasion, american gaff was used.

This cock, now a two-time winner, is a yellow legged straight comb medium red cock. Johnny become fond of this cock as this cock will sing, as Johnny puts it, all day long like a radio. Johnny called this cock Radio. Johnny asked Cecil to ask Bill the pedigree of this cock. They were told by Bill that it was from a Whitehackle cock and Murphy hen breeding.

Johnny bred this cock to a Grey hen which was a half Blueface half Bumblefoot Grey in breeding. The offsprings were too fast and has terrible performance.

Then the nick of the Radio. Johnny bred this cock to a yellow legged peacomb Kelso hen. The offsprings were of good performance. Johnny chose the best daughter of straight comb type every breeding season until he got 31/32 of the original cock linebred offsprings. These are the Radio gamebreed we have known and desired until now.

The late former Philippine Congressman James Chiongbian of Sarangani entry at World Slasher Cup was very successful using Radio and Kelso from Johnny. Johnny and James were very good business friends. Philip Chiongbian, son of James, is continuing the devotion to Johnny Jumper gamefowls and uses Johnny’s fowl for his King Cobra entry. Most of the big name in Philippine cockfighting already imported their Radio and Kelso stocks from Johnny. These two breeds from Johnny will remain on top of the performance decades from now.

Johnny characterized his Radio as very aggressive non-stop fighting, body puncher, medium station, round body, straight comb, yellow legged, medium red and whitehackle hackle. Johnny characterized his Kelso as very aggressive high flying fighting, yellow and white legged, straight and pea comb, dark and light red. Johnny mentioned that both his Radio and Kelso are not smart but has very quick reflexes and a deliberate strong blows.

Johnny Jumper Tribute cockfighting events were held at Sunset Recreational Club and Bayou Club years ago when it is legal to fight birds in Louisiana cockfight events. In these two very prestigious cockpit, Radios and Kelsos were performing well in all weapons – short knife, long knife, and gaff.

Johnny also breeds Grey, Roundhead, Hatch, and Aseel breed.

Johnny got a musical family background and played the guitar in band named Johnny Jumper and the Rhythm Drifters. The Pee in his farm stands for the last name of his business partner Ray Price, the musician.

Johnny is always a gentleman and very good conversationalist. He does not guess what other person might say or think about a subject or why the other person did something. He say he does not know the answer. He just say what he thinks or what he knows about the subject. Johnny is love by his wife Doris, son Randy and his grandson Nathan. Johnny is a cancer survivor. He is doing well and healthy during my visits.

I will leave you with Johnny’s word about the Radio.

“Cecil brought me a rooster to train one time…and this rooster was very noisy. He was happy, happy all the time. So, I trained him and uh I’d exercise him and he was just so noisy. He had a great mental attitude. So, I named him Radio. I gave him the name Radio cause he talked all the time. And that…that name has stuck with those chickens since 1962. And course people call “you the man that invented uh come up with the radios?” and I say well I come up with this one rooster you know and so I bred him to 1 kelso hen then I bred him back to 15/16 of him and that’s how the…and I still have that family to this day. We call them Radios but they are red chickens with yellow legs. Their basic bloodline was 1/2 whitehackle I was telling you about and 1/2 murphy. They come from Mr. Murphy up in New York. That’s what the rooster was made up out of, but we still have them today and they have such a great mental attitude. That’s so important…the mental attitude.”

Llamado Tayo: Know your cock by heart

Llamado Tayo

Know Your Cock by Heart

Handle your cocks with tender loving care; they can appreciate and reciprocate love.

Know yourself is an age-old dictum in warfare. In cocking, you also have to know your cock.

After you have selected your champions, the next thing to do is to know them individually.

Man and rooster should get to know each other more. A good conditioner always endeavors to find out more about his cock. Know your cock and half the battle is won, as the great Chinese general Sun Tzu would have said.

It is not enough that you note your cock’s fighting weight. It is also important to know if he likes to be moved around more, or he fights better if just left on his own for days, say in a fly pen or on the tie cord.

One of the first things you should check on a newly acquired cock is his metabolic rate. You would want to know whether this particular cock gets fat or heavy easily or whether he needs more amount of feeds to stay in shape. One way of knowing the metabolic rate of your chicken is to set a standard amount of feeds for a certain weight group.

For instance, using my maintenance feeds of 50-50 pigeon pellets and concentrate, I feed 35 grams per feeding for cocks weighing 1.8 to 2 kilos. I can determine more or less the metabolism of the individual cocks by monitoring which ones get overweight, which ones fall under the ideal weight and which one maintain the right weight.

This knowledge is important once you get into the pre-conditioning and conditioning stages, as you will know then whether this cock needs more exercise and less feeds or the other way around.

Know the cock’s natural bio-rhythm. Know what it loves to do. Know the fighting weight, the right body feel, the right diet. Most of all, always handle your cocks with tender loving care. They are living things that can appreciate and reciprocate love.

Keep a sparring record. From it you can more or less judge the respective bio-rhythm of your cocks. An experiment conducted by RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology showed that most cocks have about two weeks upside performance, two weeks downside. Meaning, they reach peak performance about once every month.

After peaking they experience a down curve for two weeks, or two sparring sessions if you spar your cocks weekly. Then, afterwards, they start peaking again.

This might explain the old tradition of timing the fight of a certain cock on a certain stage of the moon cycle. The lunar cycle is also 28 days or two two-week periods.

But a few cocks have a longer cycle of three weeks, and rare are the cocks that consistently performed well every week.

Know your cock well and it’s a way to victory.

A

fter you know your cock, leave him alone. Yes, do not push your cock too hard.

There was a scientific study that showed birds (gamefowl are birds) have little room in the brain for learning new tricks. They mostly act on instinct. So, you cannot teach a cock how to fight, you cannot train a cock to break high, you cannot tell the cock to shuffle hard. Just know if a cock can do any or all of these, and thus, try to naturally enhance these attributes through ample exercise, good care, right nutrition and an ideal environment.

Some cockers in an effort to dramatically improve their cocks’ performance resort to heavy table workouts. Others give their birds steroids, hormones and stimulants.

But what I learned from the masters is that no amount of feeds, additives or training can make a good cock out of a bad one. Over feeding and over training will never make an ace out of a bum cock. On the contrary, it can easily make a bum cock out of an ace.

After years of keenly observing, asking around and learning, I have formulated a cocking principle which I called the art of least intervention.

Once I find a good cock, I proceed to know it from head to toe, so to speak. I would learn what kind of body feel and in what weight it fights best. I would learn whether it loves to be well rested or it fights best when made hyper active. Then I give exactly what it wants.

In the later part of this book, you will read my pre-conditioning and conditioning methods. You will find mine simpler than most other systems.

I do not table-work my cocks. Except those with very low metabolism or those that love to be over exercised. If I do table exercises, it is only when necessary to fine tune the wing and leg muscles.

My exercises are mainly limited to rotation from tie cord to conditioning pens to fly pens to scratch box to 3x3 wire pens. In the early morning before sunrise, I do a little salida, kahig at sampi under artificial light in the sparring pit.

For overweight cocks, I put them back down the ground every time they try to perch at sundown. When they fly up the roost I place them back on the ground. When they fly again I put them down again. Five or six repetitions of this every day will help the cock lose weight.

I spar my cocks once a week, for two or three rounds every session. In sparring I put premium on developing the cocks’ alertness and focus. I do this by pitting them close, three feet apart, in the first round and allowing only two buckles or hits. In the second round I set them about six feet apart and for four buckles. I rest them for a couple of minutes and then spar them again this time far apart and for a longer period. However, I always make it a point to break them as soon as either of the cocks manages a bill hold.

As to conditioning aids, I don’t use any steroids, hormones or stimulants. I inject vitamin b complex every 15 days and give regularly other vitamin and mineral pills, directly or through their drinking water; and some electrolytes on hot days. Other than those, I rely on my regular feeds.

I love to just watch my cocks, to observe them how they are doing going through the count down to fight day. I love to watch them scratch, watch them fly, watch them walk inside the conditioning pen, and watch them gobble up all the feeds. I specially love to watch them at sunrise, when they seem to be at their best.

I don’t push my cocks. I don’t even condition my cocks. I just watch them condition themselves—this I learned from the masters; and this I call the science of least intervention.

Holcomb Hatch

Holcomb Hatch
by Frank Holcomb
It is thought the original Hatch was bred by Judge Leiper, not Sandy Hatch, as most people believe. They were supposed to be a Kearney Whitehackle and a Kearney Brown Red cross. Leiper also bred a cock from Duryea. In 1900 Hatch got some dark red, green legged fowl from Cassidy (some say Lynch). He bred a black red cock from Jerry Genet, of New York. This Genet Pyle cock was bred over the Cassidy (Lynch) hens, and this was the starting of the Hatch fowl.
In 1933, Hennie Mathesius went ot work for Hatch and carried his fowl with him. These fowl were Morgan Whitehackles, some Lowman blood, and some Gull/Morgan crosses. Some of these were crossed on the Hatch fowl.
Hatch gave all of his fowl to Mathesius, who later sold them to C.C. Cooke, who soon after that became a partner of E.W. Law.
We must give Cooke the credit for the Hatch fowl that we have today. J.D.. Perry made the first niche with Cooke's Hatch, but that is what Cooke paid him for.
It would be too long and complicated to write a complete history of all the different blood lines and different Hatches and their blood lines, but as to ours, the Holcomb Hatch, we will try to make it very brief, and not any more confusing than possible.
We started out with a Ruble Hatch cock, over a Sweater McGinnis (Blue Face) hen. At the same time, we bred a Democrat cock over J.D. Perry hen. The we bred the off-spring of these two together, making their off-spring 1/4 Ruble, 1/4 Democrat, 1/4 Blue Face and 1/4 Perry. At the same time of the above breeding, we bred in another pen, a Chocolate Gray cock over a jet black Aseel hen, (directly from Pakastan, and one of the very best strains of Aseel), thus giving 1/2 Chocolate Grey and 1/2 Aseel. This we crossed over the four kinds of Hatch, giving 1/2 Hatch, 1/4 Chocolate Grey and 1/4 Aseel for the first year. Then we bred back to the Hatch saide, father over daughter and son over mother, thus giving 3/4 Hatch, 1/8 Chocolate Grey and 1/8 Aseel. We keep three pens of this combination, and this we proudly call our Holcomb Hatch.

Factors that affect egg production

By Phillip Clauer

Birds stop laying suddenly at various times of the year, with no patterns or warning. In this article, Phillip J. Clauer describes some common reasons for this....

A. Decreasing day length or insufficient day length
Hens require 14 hours of day length to sustain egg production. Once day length drops below 12 hours, production will decrease and frequently stop. This happens naturally from October through to February. To prevent this, provide artificial light to maintain a constant day length of at least 14 hours per day. One 40 watt light for each 100 square feet of coop is adequate.

The lights should be added in the morning hours so the birds can go to roost as the sun sets. This prevents birds from being stranded in the dark when lights are turned out during dark hours. Some small flock owners find it easier to leave the lights on continuously. This is not a problem as long as you do not use light bulbs over the 40 watt size. However, the time clock will help lower your electric bill.

B. Improper nutrition
Layers require a completely balanced ration to sustain maximum egg production over time. Improper nutrition can occasionally cause hens to stop laying. The most common problem is failing to provide a constant source of fresh water. This is especially a problem during the coldest months when the water can freeze. Provide adequate water equipment so the birds always have fresh water.Inadequate levels of energy, protein or calcium can also cause a production decrease.

This is why it is so important to supply your laying hens with a constant supply of nutritionally balanced layer food balanced at 16% - 18% protein. Feeding whole grains, scratch feeds and table scraps will cause the birds diet to become improperly balanced. Many times these imbalances can cause other problems like prolapse (egg blow-outs). Prolapse is caused when the bird is too fat and/or egg is too large and the birds reproductive tract is expelled with the egg. Prolapse usually cause permanent damage to the hen and is fatal in many cases.

Feeding oyster shell "free choice" (always available) is also a good idea to help insure strong egg shells.

C. Disease
Disease problems can occur under the best of conditions. Often one of the first signs of disease is a drop in egg production. Other symptoms of disease include dull and listless appearance, watery eyes and nostrils, coughing, molting, lameness and mortality in the flock.

Remember some death is normal over the period of a year in any flock. However, if you suspect a disease, contact a skilled veterinarian for help in examining your flock and get an accurately diagnosis and treatment.

Your best protection against disease is to buy healthy stock and keep them isolated from other birds. Buying adult poultry and introducing them to your flock is asking for trouble. If you wish to increase your flock, buy chicks from a reputable hatchery or hatch some of your own eggs. Adult birds can look healthy and carry diseases.

D. Aging Hens
Production hens can lay efficiently for two laying cycles. However, after two or three years, many hens decline in productivity. This varies greatly from bird to bird. Good layers will lay about 50 to 60 weeks per laying cycle. Between these cycles they will be interrupted by a rest period called a molt. Poorer layers and older hens will molt more often and lay less. Removal of non-layers is recommended if economical egg production is your goal.

E. Stress
Any stress such as moving, handling, changes in environmental conditions or fright can contribute to or be the main cause for egg production declines. Common stresses include:

*Chilling. Chickens do not handle damp, drafty conditions well. Prevent excessive exposure to wet, drafty conditions during colder months.
*Handling or moving. Once the laying flock is in place, limit any unnecessary moving or handling. Switching roosters or changing the pens population will also disrupt the pens pecking order and cause some temporary social stress in your flock.
*Parasites. If external or internal parasites are present, get proper diagnosis and treatment.
*Fright. Limit the movement of children, dogs, livestock and vehicles around your flock as well as loud noises to prevent frightening the hens.
*Predators. Also can stress the birds and create a decrease in production.

F. Other problems to consider when you see a decrease in egg collection:
*Predators and snakes consuming the eggs.
*Egg-eating by hens in the flock.
*Excessive egg breakage.
*Hens hiding the eggs when able to run free.

The Gilmore fowl

The Gilmore Hatch Gamefowl History

The Gilmore Hatch Gamefowl History
By BluffCreek:

Lun Gilmore was a cocker and a good friend of Ben Ford, they fought birds with and against each other for over 60 years. Lun Gilmore acquired his birds direct from Sanford Hatch and Mike Kearny.

When Mike crossed the Kearny Brown Reds on the Hatch birds they were awesome as any ever bred until this day.

Sanford wanted to breed them back to the yellow legged side but Mike insisted on breeding them one more time to the Kearny Brown Red side and produced them to fight and fight they did and won some derbies against everyone at that time. He wanted to breed a cock of his fathers breeding, which was the Kearny Whitehackle to the Sanford/Kkerany and Kerany bleedings.

From this breeding he had 17 black birds with white specs in them and over 40 brownred looking birds, he then crossed these back on the Brown Reds-having the Kearny White Hackle in them and Hatch blood. They came all dark fowl with green legs. Mike gave Lun Glimore 6 hens and one dark red cock to breed over them. This was the origin of the Gilmore Hatch fowl,-and the Ben Ford fowl.

These birds were given and sold to Gilmore from Mr. Hatch and Mike Kearny. It did have Mike Kearny's fathers White Hackle blood in them and still till this day they will come spangle or dark!

The next breeding that was the Brown Red and Kearny Out and Out became the 42 Hatch that JD Perry dominated with the same fowl from same people except did not have the Kearny White Hackle in them yet mostly yellow leg, and the black legs made em all come odd green legged. Believe it or not, I knew Colonel Givens for over 40 years and he got his fowl from Lun Gilmore in the early 40s and also got some of Mike Kearny Jr.'s White Hackles that were dark red and spangled, and fought the Kearny White Hackle crosses at Sunset and all over North Alabama.

Colonel Givens and Jimmy East were the handlers for John Ovilan Fowler from Huntsville Ala. When John Fowler died Jimmy kept his Hatch fowl and Colonel Givens kept the White Hackles. So the Gilmore's are 1/4 Kearny White Hackle-1/4 Hatch- 1/2 Brown Red bred back to the 1/2 Hatch 1/2 Brown Red and kept that way until he passed on. Still to this day all Gilmore's will throw a spangle every other year or so. It depends on how they are bred and where you got them. So there is your facts believe it or not, but if ya didn't get em from Gilmore they're yours.

LLamado Tayo: Mahalaga ang kalidad ng manok

Napakahalaga ng kalidad ng manok

Congratulations kina Lito Garcia , Ramon Talavera at kamana Raul Ebeo .
Halagang mas mababa pa sa cost of feeds, supplement at farm maintenance.

Kamana gud pm.

Gameness, cutting, fighting ability. More power.
Killing is the name of the game.
1. Malayo ang abot ng palo. Todo stretch and paa at hita kung pumalo at malayo ang katawan. Feet out, head back.
2. Mabilis at marami ang palo.
3. May diin at malakas magpatama.

Mana: Dami at Pagkakaisa
